Expanded Polystyrene

EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE

Frozen Lemons is the pioneer and currently one of the largest converters of expanded polystyrene (EPS) in the Maldives, with expertise in expanded polypropylene (EPP), as well as vacuum and injection moulding of plastic.

We also provide development and consultation with customised products, prototyping, recycling, design, toolmaking and sub-assembly operations. Our goal is to continuously focus its attention on providing a level of service that exceeds the expectations of its customers.

What is Expanded Polystyrene?

Made up of 98% air, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is extremely lightweight, and as a result, the cost of transport of this material is significantly reduced. This in turn reduces emissions due to reduced fuel consumption, creating less impact on global warming. Further, Expanded Polystyrene is odourless and non-toxic. It does not, nor has ever, emitted chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and it is recyclable. The uses for EPS are almost limitless. It can be moulded into many shapes or forms to meet the customer’s and their product’s protection and insulation needs.

Why Expanded Polystyrene?

Expanded Polystyrene is widely used to package fresh fish and produce, as it is able to help keep food fresh through the distribution chain. Expanded Polystyrene has many useful properties:

  • LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY: can be used as an insulator against heat and cold.
  • HIGH ENERGY ABSORBING: absorbs shocks and protecting delicate items.
  • MAINTAINS IT STRENGTH IN DAMP ENVIRONMENTS: ideal for cool-chain products.
  • MOISTURE RESISTANT: meets the most stringent of hygiene requirements.
  • ENVIROMENTAL SAFETY: EPS has no nutritional value to support fungal, bacteriological or animal growth. EPS is also non-toxic and inert, and contains no chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
  • VERSATILE: EPS can be manufactured in a wider range of shapes and sizes than other materials. It is also compatible with cement, concrete, brick, masonry, mortars, plaster and bitumen-based damp-proof membranes.
  • EASY TO TRANSPORT: Because EPS is lightweight, it is easy to transport and saves fuel resources during transportation.

Care for the Enviroment

We are highly committed to providing resources for recycling EPS and maintaining systems that do not adversely affect the quality of the environment. For recycling purposes, Expanded Polystyrene is categorised as clean or contaminated. Clean means dry and free of any dirt, tape or labels. Contaminated is anything else, including packaging with stickiness, food particles or concrete. Expanded Polystyrene packaging is 100% recyclable, though at this time, is only able to recycle the clean variety. Clean, used Expanded Polystyrene packaging can be brought to most Frozenlemons sites for recycling. However, this service is only available to current Frozenlemons customers and strictly only by prior arrangement. Please contact your nearest office for more details.
